Giving thanks

The Internet is not always a friendly place.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I received a friend request from a stranger with a dog-friendly Facebook profile and at least one other dog blogger I know in his friends list.

I clicked accept.

Within seconds, he sent me a direct message. It was menacing. He said he wanted to kill my dog.

I responded by blocking this person from my profile and reporting him to Facebook. There’s no need to respond personally to trolls.

In fact, I wouldn’t even share the story here if it weren’t in such sharp contrast with my experience in general — and especially the past few days — with people I’ve never met in real life but connected with through the Internet, through this blog.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who has shared kind words, wisdom, encouragement and offered to help since I announced Charlie Machete returned to Wayward House.

A foster dog coming back is not the worst thing in the world, but our surprise and disappointment at the situation have made for an overwhelming few days. Thank you so much for your comments and support, which have helped keep me sane.

Today marks the fourth day since Charlie Machete came back to our home, and I’m happy to report that things are going great so far.

An initial check from the vet’s office revealed he’s as healthy as he looks. He still weighs in at just over 60 pounds, and he still loves to shake hands and snuggle. (But he doesn’t like getting his blood drawn one bit.)

I’m excited to take him for a walk with the KC Pittie Pack this Saturday where Charlie Machete will get to see some of his old friends and ham it up for Fido Fetch Photography.

I also need to take this opportunity to thank some folks who showed me kindness before we sprung Charlie Machete from death row.

Recently, two fellow bloggers gave us awards.

The first was the lovely Bassa’s Blog, who included us in a list of 52 bloggers — one for every week of the year — acknowledged in an anniversary post.

Bassa’s You Make Me Shine Award isn’t supposed to be passed on. I wanted to publicly acknowledge it because that’s what you do when someone pays you a compliment. You say thanks.

If you haven’t checked out Bassa’s Blog, yet, I urge you to do so. It’s all about the day-to-day experiences of a giant, awesome dog.

The second award we received recently came from Deanna and the pack over at For the Love of My Dogs.

It’s always touching when someone deems you and your work inspiring, and that’s what Deanna did by handing us the Very Inspiring Blogger Award.

This one comes with some rules. Share 7 things about yourself and spread the love to up to 15 other inspiring blogs. Here goes:

7 things

1. Tough guy Charlie Machete was pulled from the shelter in Minnie’s old pink gentle leader.

2. I blog about business-y things for my employers at Your Brand Partner.

3. Two almost life-size stuffed dogs that look like Luke and Charlie Machete live at my office.

4. My mom is a travel consulant, and I recently started a new blog to help support her business. More to come on that.

5. The paw paw tree I recently wrote about seemed to die shortly after the post. However, in the past few days it has come back to life.

6. If I don’t plant some roses this weekend, they’re surely going to die.

7. Last weekend, two of my oldest guy friends came to visit, and we went to see the band Pinback.

If you’re seeing a lot of familiar names in here, it’s because I decided to share this award with bloggers who commented on Charlie Machete’s return. I know not everyone participates in these awards or some of you may have receive this one before.

In my book, it’s cool if you break the chain. I just wanted to say THANKS FOR BEING AWESOME. (And that goes for my supporters out there who aren’t bloggers, too.)

  1. I used to listen to “Penelope” on repeat in college. Where was Pinback playing? Oh, and thank you for the award!

  2. Thanks for the intro to Bassa blog. Very fun! Being a Nebraskan….what rescue group helped with Charlie’s return?

  3. Great job on your blog! I know that if “Charlie” go talk he be ever so thankful to you both for saving his life!

  4. Congrats on the Awards! Have a Great Day:)

  5. Congratulations on the awards. It is always great to see blogs I like and admire being acknowledged in this way. Thank you for thinking of Bassa’s Blog when you drew up your list of nominations for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award.

I too received a similar friend request from a stranger with a dog-friendly Facebook profile and had the same experience as you. I immediately blocked and reported him. I really cannot understand why people behave in such a terrible way. However, that isolated experience is offset by the thousands of great experiences I have had through Facebook and through blogging.

  6. Congratulations on your multiple Awards and thank you so much for passing one on to me. All the furry critters thank you from the bottom of their hearts (as do I, of course).
